How to change pool filter sand

Extend the life and efficiency of your pool filter by following these steps to change the filter sand.

Gather materials

Determine the size of your filter and purchase the required amount of sand.

Drain the filter

Turn off the pump and remove the drain cap to let water drain from the filter.

Remove the multi-port valve

Carefully slide the valve off the sand pipe.

4

Remove old sand

Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the sand from the filter.

Inspect the lateral assembly

Remove, wash, and inspect for any damage or breaks.

Refill with new sand

Add water to the filter to cover the laterals, then slowly pour in the new sand.

7

Reassemble & backwash

Replace the valve, run a backwash for 3 minutes, then rinse for 1 minute.

Switch to filter mode

Set the valve to “Filter” and restart the pump.

Bonus tip: Always turn off the pump before changing filter settings.

Closing tips

Above ground pool closing

Prepare your above ground pool for winter with these simple steps:

Add winterizing chemicals to the pool water.

Lower water level 1–2 inches below return jets.

3

Disconnect and store hoses, skimmer baskets, and return jet fittings.

4

Remove the pump and store it indoors.

5

Place a winter cover over the pool and secure it with a winch and rope.

Winterize your in ground pool like a pro:

Add closing chemicals and circulate the water.

2

Drain water below the return jets using a submersible pump.

3

Disconnect and store the pump, skimmer baskets, and return fittings.

4

Insert foam rope and winterizing plugs in return lines and skimmers.

5

Cover the pool with a winter cover and secure it with water bags.

Opening tips

Above ground pool opening

Prepare your above ground pool for summer with these simple steps:

1

Remove debris and water from the pool cover.

2

Reinstall skimmer baskets, return fittings, and hoses.

3

Refill the pool and prime the pump.

4

Backwash the filter and switch to “Filter” mode.

5

Add opening chemicals and let the water circulate for 24 hours.

6

Bring a water sample to our store for testing.
